About this tune

Out on the Ocean appears in O’Neill’s The Dance Music of Ireland, published in 1907. It continues to circulate in melodic variants, as many traditional dance tunes do.

The jig moves through repeating phrases with a gentle rise and fall. Its low opening and higher response create a flowing conversation between the two strains.
