Lyrics

Friedrich Schiller · An die Freude, as set by Beethoven (1824)

The opening stanza in the original German. The tab above contains only the eight-bar opening theme; the full choral movement continues beyond it.

Freude, schöner Götterfunken, Tochter aus Elysium, Wir betreten feuertrunken, Himmlische, dein Heiligtum!

Deine Zauber binden wieder, Was die Mode streng geteilt; Alle Menschen werden Brüder, Wo dein sanfter Flügel weilt.

About this tune

The familiar Ode to Joy theme comes from the finale of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, first performed in 1824. The movement brings soloists and a choir into the symphony to sing words from Friedrich Schiller’s poem An die Freude, a celebration of joy and human fellowship.

Repeated notes and balanced phrases give the theme an unusually direct, songlike character. A small rise and fall in the melody supports its broad sense of affirmation.
